Our favourite Instagram hashtags for small businesses & bloggers and tips on how to use them!

In this blog post, we are sharing some of our best tips for using hashtags to get your content seen, as well as some of our favourite hashtags across 5 categories

1- Why you should use Instagram hashtags?

Instagram has gone through a lot of changes in the past few months, but one thing has remained constant throughout: the importance of Instagram hashtags.

Using relevant, targeted hashtags on your posts and stories is still one of the best ways to get discovered by new audiences on Instagram. And this can translate into more engagement, more followers, and more customers for your business.

2- How do Instagram hashtags work?

Every post you create on Instagram can be followed by an Instagram caption and hashtags , and these hashtags will help in the process of content discovery.

For example, a fitness/healthy blogger might post a picture of a smoothie bowl, and then use the hashtags #superfoods#cleaneating, and #smoothiebowl when it’s uploaded to Instagram.

By using these three hashtags, the image is cataloged so other Instagram users who enjoy healthy foods can easily find it (thanks to the #).

Hashtags can really help to increase the visibility of your Instagram posts and target the right audience.

3- How to use Instagram Hashtags?

  • Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post. Advice on this varies a lot, but we say use the full 30 if you can, as long as they’re all relevant to your post.

  • Any comments or captions with more than 30 hashtags will automatically be flagged as spam and will be deleted, so try not to go over or you’ll have to do it all over again!

  • Search and discover trending hashtags to capitalize on them for each post.

  • Avoid “over-used” hashtags.

#photooftheday #instagood #beautiful etc. are all very generic, and each have over a billion of posts associated with them, so your content will just get lost .

  • Find hashtags that have between 10,000 to 500,000 posts associated with them. This ensures that a particular hashtag is used by people in your target market, but is not overly used to the point where your posts have no chance of staying up top for long enough to be discovered. Look for hashtags that are updated constantly and frequently, but that allows your content to stay recent for a few hours.

  • It is generally a good idea to have a mix of hashtags with small, medium, and high volume of content. High volume hashtags will allow your content to be seen by as many eyes as possible, whereas less popular hashtags allow your content to stay up longer. Again just always make sure every hashtag that you’re using is relevant to the post.

  • If applicable to your post, add in some local hashtags. For example, if you're a food blogger in Hong Kong, add #foodieshk #852food #foodhk etc.

  • Create your own unique hashtag to apply to each of your own posts ( #treasuremehk #brandlab for example). This makes it easier for people to find your work on Instagram, and you can ask your clients to use the same hashtag if they share your work too.

  • To find more relevant hashtags to your niche, use Instagram’s search feature. Search for a hashtag you already use, and at the top of the results you see a bunch of related hashtags. Take a look at each of these to see what they’re all about, and if they’re relevant to what you do, add them to your list!  ⬇⬇⬇
